Mahler Festival: Leipzig  May 17 - 23, 2011

One of my favourite composers is Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) and the year 2011 will mark the centennial of his death. As we push deeper into the 21st century, the music of Mahler grows in popularity. Mahler’s life straddled two centuries. Behind him lay a golden age, the comfort of the rich Austro-German musical traditions of Bach to Bruckner, while the future in the 20th century seemed frightening, turbulent and ominous.

Through his symphonies, Mahler wrestled to understand the human soul and the meaning of life and death, and life after death. It’s a wonderful musical language, as it expresses the personal and the philosophical, often suggesting another state of mind and being. It’s a language that tells us about ourselves, our purpose, our possible future and our spirituality.

There are many events to mark the Mahler year, with one of the most impressive taking place in May, 2011 in Leipzig, where Mahler spent a few formative years in the early part of his career. It’s a spectacular festival of the symphonies by Mahler, performed by touring orchestras and conductors. I’ve chosen to attend the first half of this two-week festival. We’ll attend six concerts:

Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection”
Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig
Riccardo Chailly

Symphony No. 3
Staatskapelle Dresden
Esa-Pekka Salonen

Symphony No. 10 (Deryck Cooke version)
MDR (Leipzig Radio) Orchestra
Jun Märkl

Symphony No. 7
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
TBA

Totenfeier, Das Lied von der Erde
Royal Concertgebouw Orch. Amsterdam
Fabio Luisi

Adagio of Symphony No. 10, Symphony No. 1
London Symphony Orchestra
Valery Gergiev

Our central Leipzig hotel allows easy access to concerts, restaurants, and museums. Of course, Berlin and Dresden are a short train ride, for those who wish to extend their stay. As on all Sound Advice™ tours, I’ll be your constant host throughout, answering your questions as well as offering daily informal talks on the Mahler symphonies, insight, background and what to listen for. After the concerts, I hope to retire to a local Leipzig establishment for a glass of wonderful German beer or wine and stimulating discussion.
